Bacterial Infections Linked to Contact Lenses

According to a new study published in Optometry and Vision Science, the official journal of the American Academy of Optometry, contact lens wearers who do not follow specific hygiene habits are at a much higher risk for bacterial infection. Hygiene habits identified as problematic in this study include:
  • Not washing hands with soap and water before handling contacts
  • Not allowing contact lens cases to air-dry
  • Using mismatched lens cases and disinfectant solutions
Researchers in this study found that bacterial contamination of contact lenses was more prevalent in users who had worn lenses for longer than two years. This furthers the theory that contact lens wearers become less vigilant over time.
Time to Consider LASIK
If you would like to avoid the potential for bacterial contamination while also freeing yourself form the burden of contact lenses, it may be time to consider LASIK. With this procedure, the cornea is reshaped – eliminating refractive errors and producing clear vision without the need for prescription eyewear.
Thanks to modern LASIK techniques and technology, nearly all contact lens wearers are candidates for permanent vision correction. The best way to learn if this procedure is right for you is though a one-on-one consultation with an experienced eye surgeon.
