According to a research review published in the March issue of Optometry and Vision Science, the official journal of the American Academy of Optometry, custom-made contact lenses used to shape growing eyes can significantly slow the progression of myopia. The technique, known as orthokeratology or Ortho-K, uses customized contact lenses that are worn by children while they sleep. When worn as directed, these special lenses have proven very effective at guiding eye growth to help shorten axial length. This process slows the progression of myopia and can even reduce risks for adult vision problems such as cataracts, glaucoma, and retinal detachment.
