Avoiding LASIK Complications
In 2014, nearly 650,000 LASIK procedures
were performed in the United States. When asked to self-report, around 90
percent of LASIK patients indicate they are happy with their results. This coincides
nicely with findings published by the American Academy of Ophthalmology
suggesting that secondary procedures are necessary in only seven to ten percent
of cases.
Dry eyes, double or hazy vision, and halos around lights are
among the most common LASIK complications. Dry eyes may be related to an existing
problem and can typically be treated with eye drops, but visual aberrations may
be caused by over or under-correction. The best way to avoid inadequate or
excessive correction is by taking your time to choose a LASIK
surgeon who is experienced, qualified, and dedicated to patient safety and
satisfaction.
It is important to remember that even the most skilled surgeon
can benefit from technological advancements such as custom LASIK. While slightly
more expensive, wavefront guided procedures offer a more reliable result and
can help reduce risks for both common and more severe complications. Be sure to
ask your eye surgeon for information about all of your options before
committing to any particular procedure.
