Can an App Correct Vision?

Glasses Off is a new app for iPhones that claims to eliminate a user’s reliance on glasses and contact lenses without the need for LASIK. The app offers a 12-week program that is used for 15-minutes at a time, three times per week. At the end of this period, the creators of the app claim reading vision will be greatly improved.
The cost of the app is around $60 for four months, but continued use is recommended to maintain results. Plans for making this app available on other devices are currently in the works.
Better than LASIK?
While the creators of Glasses Off claim the app can improve reading vision, they admit it cannot provide permanent vision correction. The only way to permanently improve your vision is through vision correction surgery performed by an experienced eye surgeon.
It is also important to remember that an app on a smartphone should never serve as a stand-in for proper vision care. An app cannot detect or diagnose a vision disorder, nor can it be trusted to provide effective solutions for treatment.
If you are looking for the most effective treatment for your vision problems, please contact an experienced ophthalmologist in your area to schedule an initial consultation today.

Foods that Nourish the Eyes

Everyone knows that a healthy diet is essential for optimal physical health. But did you know that the foods you eat can also impact the health of your eyes?
A diet rich in whole foods, complete with a variety of fruits and vegetables, can help prevent a number of age-related vision disorders. Maintaining a healthy diet can even help slow the progress of vision disorders you already have and may play an important role in preventing blindness.
The Best Foods for Visual Health
Foods rich in Vitamins C and E, zinc, lutein, zeaxanthin, and omega-3 fatty acids have been shown to reduce risks for cataracts and macular degeneration. You can get many of these nutrients by eating delicious foods including:
·         Dark leafy greens
·         Cabbage and brussles sprouts
·         Citrus fruit and berries
·         Seeds, nuts, and whole grains
·         Salmon, herring, oysters, and crab
·         Turkey
A well-rounded diet with a focus on whole and wholesome foods is the best way to get the nutrients your eyes need, but supplements can play an important role as well. Talk to your ophthalmologist about your diet to learn if changes or additions can help protect your vision well into the future.

Taking Care of Your Eyes in the Winter

The winter months pose a slew of potential problems for the eyes. The best way to avoid problems and prevent serious issues is knowing how to properly care for your eyes during this cold and often dry time of year.
Forced heating can dry out the air indoors and irritate eyes. Even clean heating systems can cause vision problems such as red, and itchy eyes. Running a humidifier inside is a very effective way to counter the effects of dry air. If you wear contact lenses, limiting time outdoors and using eye drops can help reduce dryness as well.
Protection from the Elements
Wind, cold, and snow can all irritate the eyes. To protect your eyes in the winter, be sure to wear googles or glasses when out in windy conditions. A brimmed hat or pullover hood can also help protect eyes from the elements and reduce discomfort.
Sunglasses should be worn at all times during the day, even when it is overcast. Light reflected off of snow can cause serious harm to eyes, making the use of a wide-spectrum UV/UVB lens important during the winter months.
If you begin to develop vision problems or suffer chronic irritation this winter, please contact an experienced ophthalmologist in your area to schedule an appointment.
